The Nava-narasiṁha Temples of Ahobilam

We recently undertook a pilgrimage to Ahobilam in the jungles of Andhra Pradesh, India, a sacred place renowned for its nine ancient temples dedicated to Śrī Narasiṁha. The pilgrimage follows the sequence of the Mantrarāja prayer, which describes the Lord through a series of powerful attributes.

ugraṁ vīraṁ mahā-viṣṇuṁ
jvalantaṁ sarvato-mukham
nṛsiṁhaṁ bhīṣaṇaṁ bhadraṁ
mṛtyur mṛtyuṁ namāmy aham

I bow to the Lord of terrible splendour,
Heroic in might, the all-pervading Viṣṇu,
Wreathed in living flame and light unending,
Whose gaze is cast to the fourfold quarters of the universe.

To Narasiṁha I bow – dread to the powers of darkness,
Yet to the faithful a fountain of blessing;
He who stands before the gates of dissolution,
The Conqueror of Death, the Death of death itself.

Each of the nine shrines in Ahobilam corresponds to one of these qualities, from the formidable presence of Ugra Narasiṁha to the gentle and compassionate Malola Narasiṁha seated with Lakṣmī.

The pilgrimage concluded at the remote shrine of Pāvana Narasiṁha, traditionally understood as the purifier, where the deeper theological significance of Narasiṁha is brought into focus. As reflected in the narration accompanying the journey, Narasiṁha is not approached merely as a protector of the material body, but as sarva-vighna-vināśa – the remover of obstacles on the path of bhakti. The visit also included the ascent to the Ugra Stambha, the dramatic cliff-site associated with the Lord’s appearance from the pillar.
