Overview

On the occasion of the 127th appearance day festival of Oṁ Viṣṇupāda Śrīla Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī, we present this Vyāsa-pūjā offering by Swami B.G. Narasiṅgha Mahārāja, composed in glorification of Śrīla Purī Gosvāmī on September 1st, 2000.

In the Bhagavad-gītā, Śrī Kṛṣṇa has said:

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin
nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato’yaṁ purāṇo
na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain. (Bhagavad-gītā 2.20)

The soul is eternal, but in material bondage, the activities of the soul are in conflict with his eternal nature of servitude toward the fountainhead of all eternal beings, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa. To adjust those souls fallen into material bondage and to guide them on the path back to home, back to Godhead, the Supreme Lord sometimes appears Himself, or sends His bona fide representative to impart to us divine knowledge and to teach us by perfect example.

Therefore, it is to be understood that when the ācārya appears in this mortal world, he does so under the direct order of the Supreme Lord and not due to the karma of his previous life.

We are happy to say that we feel it profoundly in our hearts that parama-pūjyapāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja was one such exalted representative of the Supreme Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, appearing in our midst to impart divya-jñānam (divine knowledge) and show us by his perfect example how to attain the eternal kingdom of God. Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja was a perfect disciple of Śrī Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda and as such he was naturally a perfect guru and ācārya.

It is with hundreds and thousands of prayers, koṭi, koṭi, koṭi daṇḍavat-praṇāms, that we humbly prostrate ourselves before the lotus feet of such an exalted ācārya as Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja and remember his tirobhava, his beautiful entrance into the eternal pastimes of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa and Śrī Śrī Gaura-Gadādhara simultaneously.

The place of the blissful samādhi of Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja was Īśodhyāna Māyāpura (the eternal abode of Śrī Śrī Gaura-Gadādhara) – that place which is non-different from the eternal gardens wherein the Supreme Goddess of Fortune, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī resides, surrounded by Her confidential friends and associates. In that transcendental pleasure garden of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī also eternally resides Śrī Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura and Śrī Siddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda in their liberated forms as maidservants, always engaged in eternal līlā, or pastimes, of divine service to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.

At the close of the Kārttika month on the day of Rāsa-pūrṇimā, Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja entered his samādhi at Īśodhyāna to meet face to face with his Divine Masters and the exalted Queen of Vṛndāvana, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, accompanied by all Her eternal associates. Having attained the fulfillment of his innermost heart’s desire, Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja was indeed extremely happy on that day.

But for us, the fallen souls of this mundane world, we are left to beat our heads against stone in the mood of separation from such an exalted and affectionate personality as Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja. By the grace of the Supreme Lord, we have had the opportunity to serve several of the Supreme Lord’s dearest associates, and in their association, we have seen and heard many wonderful things. The ācārya is always manifest with divine knowledge, complete control over his senses, profound realisations, the capacity to melt even hearts of stone, and the dedication to save all fallen souls from the grips of māyā, illusion. All these qualities and many more were to be found in the person of Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja – but it is by far his natural humility and his intense affection for the devotees of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu that shines most prominently from every atom of his existence.

The separation of Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja is being acutely felt by his thousands of followers and devotees around the world. It is our humble prayer that His Divine Grace Śrī Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja will continue to shower his most affectionate embraces upon us, continue to guide us, and one day make us fit for the eternal service of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa and Śrī Śrī Gaura-Gadādhara.

We offer our most humble koṭi, koṭi, koṭi daṇḍavat-praṇāms at the lotus feet of the ācārya, Śrī Śrīmad Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja, and pray that he will forever shower his infinite grace and kindness upon us.

Śrī Śrīmad Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja ki jaya!
