Overview

Śrī Gopīnātha Vijñapti is a deeply personal prayer of surrender by Śrīla Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja, composed in 1946. Beginning with glorification of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the supreme mercy of nāma-saṅkīrtana in Kali-yuga, it gradually becomes an intimate plea to Gopīnātha to free the heart from material attachment, offences and hardness, and make the devotee wholly dependent upon divine mercy. Central to the prayer is guru-tattva – through Śrī Guru's grace, one gains access to Rādhā-dāsyam and the path of Rūpānuga-bhakti.

(1)

svayaṁ bhagavān vrajendra-nandana
rādhā-bhāva-kānti dhari
śrī-gaurāṅga-rūpe naḍe avatarī
(āhā) ki līlā karilā hari

Vrajendra-nandana is Svayaṁ Bhagavān, the son of Nanda. He took the mood and complexion of Śrī Rādhā and appeared in the form of Śrī Gaurāṅga in Nadīyā. O! What pastimes Hari performed!

(2)

āhā ki premera vanyā prakāśiyā
ḍubāilā nara-nārī
kibā sudhā-mākhā-nāma mahā-mantra
gāoye vadana bhari

O what a flood of prema He manifested, drowning all the men and women. What kind of nectar smears the mahā-mantra? Sing it with your mouth full of joy.

(3)

e nāma ābhāse śoka moha bhaya
kichui rahite nāre
nāme prema-sindhu uchali uṭhiyā
nimajaya sabākāre

Even by nāmābhāsa, a semblance of this Name, grief, delusion, and fear cannot remain. By the Name, the ocean of prema swells and immerses everyone.

(4)

śrī-nāma rūpete bhagavān hari
kali-kāle avatāra
se nāme ādara nā haile kise
bala ha’be bhava pāra

Bhagavān Hari has descended in the age of Kali in the form of śrī-nāma. If one has no regard for that Name, by what strength will one cross material existence?

(5)

satya-yuge dhyāna tretā-yuge yajña
dvāpare arcana kari
yei phala labhe tāhā kali-yuge
nāma gāne dena hari

Result that was attained through meditation in Satya-yuga, through sacrifice in Tretā-yuga, and through Deity worship in Dvāpara-yuga – Śrī Hari gives that very result in Kali-yuga through the singing of the Holy Name.

(6)

viśeṣataḥ ei kalira māhātmya
adhika baliyā śuni
śri-nāma-kīrtane su-durlabha prema
dena gaura guṇamaṇi

Specifically, we hear that the greatness of this Kali-yuga is proclaimed as supreme. Through śrī-nāma-kīrtana, prema, which is most rare, is bestowed by Gaura, the personified jewel of divine virtues.

(7)

anarpita-cara unnata-ujjvala

vraja-rasa-sāra yei
ei kali-yuge tāhā dena gaura
āra kāro śakti nāi

In Kali-yuga, that which had never been given before, the most exalted essence of vraja-rasa, is given by Gaura. No one else has the power to bestow it.

(8)

dhyāna yajña yāge bahu truṭi raya,
nā pāya vrajera hari
kali-jīve tāi śikhāna gaurāṅga
āpani ācāra kari

There are many defects In meditation and yajñā, thus one does not attain Śrī Hari of Vraja. Hence, for the jīvas of Kali-yuga, Gaurāṅga teaches by practicing Himself

(9)

sarva-vidha bhakti aṅga madhye śreṣṭha

nāma-saṅkīrtana haya
(daśa) aparādha tyaji gāhile ādare,
haya śīghra premodaya

Among all the limbs of bhakti, nāma-saṅkīrtana is the foremost. If one chants with reverence, giving up the ten offences, prema very quickly awakens.

(10)

tri-tāpa jvālāya sabe jvale mari
nā pāi duḥkhera śeṣa
sādhu-saṅga kari’ hari bhaji yadi
tabe anta haya kleśa

All burn and die in the fire of the threefold miseries. There is no end to suffering. If one worships Hari in the company of sādhus, then suffering finally comes to an end.

(11)

sarva-yajña sāra ei nāma yajña
ihāte viśvāsa kari’
bhaja bhaja bhāi ekānta manete
avaśya milibe hari

The essence of all yajñas is this nāmayajña – have faith in this. Worship, worship, O brother, with a one-pointed mind and  surely you will attain Hari.

(12)

nāma-nāmī mājhe bheda kichu nāi,
du’ye sarva-śaktimān
tathāpi nāmera karuṇā adhika,
jāne saba matimān

There is no difference at all between the Name and the Named – both are all-powerful. Yet the mercy of the Name is greater. All who are wise know this.

(13)

vācya nāmī kṛṣṇa vācaka śrī-nāma-rūpe
ha’na avatāra
sei nāma-kṛpā vinā bala se nāmire
pāite śakati kā’ra

Kṛṣṇa is the one indicated (vācya), and the Holy Name is the indicator (vācaka). Thus, in the form of śrī-nāma, He descends as an avatāra. Without the mercy of that Name, who even has the power to attain the Named?

(14)

śrī-hari e-bāra svayaṁ rūpete,
āsiyā śikhāla yāhā
sakala chāḍiyā se śikṣā labhiyā,
hao pāra moha-māyā

This time, Śrī Hari Himself came in person and taught those very teachings. Abandoning everything else and receiving such instructions, cross beyond bewildering māyā.

(15)

brāhmaṇa sajjana sabe jāna sāra
nāma vinā gati nāi
karma jñāna yoga- ādi panthā dhari
kabhu nā nistāra pāi

O brāhmaṇas and noble souls all! Know this essential truth – there is no deliverance without the Name. Taking up the paths of karma, jñāna, yoga etc, one never achieves deliverance.

(16)

śrī-gaurāṅga-śikṣā kara sabe sāra
anya cintā parihara
śrī-nāma āśraya kari’ avilambe
śrī-kṛṣṇa bhajana kara

Accept the teachings of Śrī Gaurāṅga as the essence all things, and do not worry about anything else. Without delay, take shelter of Śrī Nāma and engage in the worship of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

(17)

āji kāli kari’ dina ca’le yāya
ekhano ki bhāva’ base
janmaiśvarya śruta – śrī’ra abhimāna,
tyaji’ maja nāma-rase

Today, tomorrow – the days pass by. Even now, why are you just sitting and thinking? Abandon the pride of birth, wealth, learning, and beauty, and become absorbed in nāmarasa.

(18)

jīvana anitya jāna’ sabe sāra
ei āche, ei nāi
yata śīghra pāra’ guru pādāśraye
bhaja gopīnātha bhāi

All of you, know this essential truth – life is temporary. Now it is there, the next moment it is not. O brother! As soon as you are able, take shelter at the feet of Śrī Guru and worship Gopīnātha.

(19)

karma-jaḍa smārta brāhmaṇa pallīte
ki khelā khelite hari
(śrī) rādhā giridhārī gopīnātha rūpe
āsilena kṛpā kari’

In the settlement of karma-bound, ritualistic Smārta brāhmaṇas, *what a wondrous game Hari enacted! Śrī Rādhā-Giridhārī, in the form of Gopīnātha, appeared, bestowing His mercy.

*Translator’s Note: Here, Śrīla Purī Gosvāmī is referring to the place of his divine appearance, Ganganandapur, in Jessore, East Bengal.

 (20)

ke bujhibe tāṅra līlāra rahasya
āche hetu su-gambhīra
tāṅra āgamana nāhi habe vyartha,
avaśya bujhibe dhīra

Who can understand the mystery of His līlā? Its cause is exceedingly profound. His advent will never be in vain – the sober and discerning certainly understand this.

(21)

dayāmaya hari yā’re dayā kare
hare’ tāra saba dhana
āsakti yāhāte tāi hari’ laya
krame hare’ tāra mana

When the merciful Hari bestows His mercy upon someone, He takes away all that person’s wealth. Whatever one is attached to—Hari removes that first, and gradually He steals away the mind itself.

(22)

saṁsāra chāḍāye bhikhārī sājāya
kāṅdāya tāṅhāra tare
kāṅdāte pārile baḍa khuśī haya
kāṅdile pīriti kare

He makes one give up worldly life and dresses him as a beggar. He makes him to cry for Him alone. If He can make one cry, He becomes greatly pleased – when one weeps, He responds with love.

(23)

vajra-tulya mora kaṭhina hṛdaya,
sarasa karahe hari
tora tare’ yena niśi-dina keṅde
parāṇa chāḍite pāri

My heart is hard like a thunderbolt. O Hari, make it soft and tender so that for You alone I may weep day and night, and be able even to give up my very life

(24)

hā hā giridhārī gopīnātha bali’
kāṅduka āmāra mana
śrī-guru vaiṣṇave ei kṛpā sabe
yāci’ āmi anukṣaṇa

Let my mind weep out loud, “O Giridhārī! Gopīnātha!’ At every moment, I beg for mercy from Śrī Guru and the Vaiṣṇavas.

(25)

pathera kāṅgāla kariyā āmare,
rākhite cāhe ye hari
tā’te yena duḥkha nā haya āmāra,
tā’i yena kṛpā smari

If Hari wishes to keep me as a beggar on the roadside, let that not bring me any sorrow. May I remember that very condition as His mercy.

(26)

tāṅhāra icchāya icchā milāiba,
kabe habe hena dina
sakala bhāvete tāṅ’te citta saṅpi
tṛṇāpekṣā haba hīna

When will that day come when His desire becomes my desire. Offering my heart to Him in every way, may I become more insignificant than a blade of grass.

(27)

taru-sama habe sahiṣṇutā mora,
amānī mānada haba
śrī-nāma kīrtana ānanda-sāgare
satata majiyā raba

May my tolerance become like that of a tree. May I be without desire for honour, yet give honour to others. May I remain forever immersed in the ocean of bliss of śrī-nāma-kīrtana.

(28)

hā hā gopīnātha kara kṛpā more
tumi ta’ sakali pāra
daśa aparādha āmāra durdaiva,
citta ha’te apasāra

O Gopīnātha, have mercy upon me. You alone are capable of everything. My misfortune is these ten offences – please remove them from my heart.”

(29)

aparādhī ba’le tora nāma-sudhā
ādara karite nāri
jaḍa viṣayete rati bāḍe sadā,
bala prabhu kibā kari

Because I am an offender, I cannot show respect to the nectar of Your Name. My attachment to material objects is always increasing— tell me, O Lord, what am I to do?”

(30)

bhāviyā dekhechi duṣṭa mana kabhu
mora mānā nāhi śune
tumi yadi prabhu śamiyā tāhāre
kara tava ājñādhīne

I have reflected and seen that this wicked mind never listens to any prohibitions. If You, O Lord, would subdue it, then place it under Your command.

(31)

tabe jāni bhāla haibe tāhāra
tomāra bhajana habe
tomāra śravaṇa kīrtana-smaraṇe
satata majiyā rabe

Then I know that the mind will become fine when it engages in Your bhajana, and remains forever immersed in hearing, chanting, and remembering You.

(32)

tava ahaitukī kṛpā vinā prabhu
nāhi dekhi anya-gati
bhajana sādhana kichu nāhi haya
duḥkhe mari’ divā-rāti

O Lord, without Your causeless mercy, I see no other refuge. When no bhajana or sādhana takes place, then I simply suffer and die in misery day and night.

(33)

tumi caitya-guru ha’ye diyechile
tomāra bhajane mati
mahānta guru-o haiyā tumi-i
śrī-caraṇe dile sthiti

Becoming the caitya-guru, you bestowed upon me an inclination for Your bhajana. And becoming the mahānta-guru also, You Yourself placed me at Your holy feet.

(34)

sei guru-pade nitya-sthiti labhi
tāṅhāra prasāda pāi
ei kṛpā prabhu kara more sadā
guru vinā gati nāi

Gaining an eternal place at those feet of Śrī Guru, I have received his mercy. O Lord, please bestow this grace upon me always –  for without the guru, there is no refuge.

(35)

tava priyatamā rādhā-nija-jana
śrī-guru āmara haya
śrī-vārṣabhānavī dayitera dāsa
nāme tāṅra paricaya

My guru is one of the intimate associates of Your beloved Rādhā. He is known by the name Śrī Vārṣabhānavī Dayita Dāsa – the servant of the servant of the Daughter of Vṛṣabhānu.

(36)

(gopīnātha!)
tava priyatamā ‘śrī-rādhā-nayana-maṇi’
āmāra prabhura pade
hā hā gopīnātha dāo rati mati
tabe ta’ puribe sādhe

(O Gopīnātha!) The one who is most dear to You, that jewel of the eye of Śrī Rādhā (Nayana-maṇi), is my guru at whose feet I reside. O Gopīnātha, please grant me attachment and understanding – then alone will my aspiration be fulfilled.

(37)

tāṅra kṛpā vinā tomāra bhajana
kichu nā bujhiba nātha
sakali saphala habe yadi tiṅho
kare more ātmasāt

O Lord, without his grace, I can understand nothing about Your bhajana. Everything will become successful if he fully accepts me as his own.

(38)

tava mano’bhīṣṭa jāne guru mora,
tiṅha yadi kṛpā kare
śrī-rādhāra kṛpā avaśya paiba,
tava kṛpā habe more

My guru knows Your heart’s desire. If he bestows his mercy, then I will surely receive Śrī Rādhā’s grace, and thereby Your mercy will come to me.

(39)

śrī-rādhāra preme, bāndhā tumi prabhu,
rādhānātha nāma dhara
(śrī) rādhā-priya-sakhī, dāsya yei pāya,
tāra sevā angīkara

O Lord, bound by Śrī Rādhā’s love, You have assume the name Rādhānātha, the Lord of Rādhā. You accept the service of one who attains the service of Her priyā-sakhīs.

(40)

he rādhā-vallabha gopīnātha mora
hena bhāgya kabe habe
guru-rupā sakhī kṛpā kari kabe
(tava) sevā adhikāra dibe

O My Gopīnātha, beloved of Rādhā! When will I be granted such fortune? When will a sakhī in the form of my guru, bestow her mercy and award me the eligibility to serve You?”

(41)

śrī-guru-gaurāṅga navadvīpa-dhāma
kabe more kṛpā ka’re
rādhā-dāsya diyā pālibe satata
rākhi more vraja-pure

When will Śrī Guru and Gaurāṅga of Navadvīpa-dhāma shower mercy upon me? Granting me the service of Rādhā, may I always be kept in Vraja-pura eternally.

(42)

śrī-rūpera kṛpā vinā rādhā-dāsya
kabhu nāhi kāro mile
(śrī) rūpa ānugatya tabe ta’ pāiba,
guru kṛpā kari dile

Without Śrī Rūpa’s mercy, the service of Rādhā is never granted to anyone. Only by following Śrī Rūpa will one obtain it, if the guru, by his mercy, bestows it.

(43)

śrī-rūpa gosāi śrī-guru-rūpete
ye dīkṣā diyāche kāne
se dīkṣā sphurile se mantra jāgile
pāi rādhā-dāsya-dhane

Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī, in the form of Śrī Guru, gives dīkṣā through the ear. When that dīkṣā is properly kindled and the mantra awakens, one receives the treasure of rādhā-dāsya, service to Śrī Rādhā.

(44)

aprākṛta kāma jāgiyā uṭhibe
tuccha habe jaḍa-kāma
aprākṛta puṣpa bāṇāhata ha’ye
khuṅjiba rādhāra śyāma

When divine desire awakens, material desires will become insignificant. Struck by transcendental flower-arrows, one will search for Rādhā’s Śyāma.*

* Translator’s Note: Kāmadeva, the god of mundane love, is armed with five flower arrows – white lotus (representing infatuation), aśoka flower (agitation), mango flower (burning desire), jasmine (extreme dryness) and blue lotus (destruction). He uses these arrows to bewilder the bound jīvas. Similarly, Kṛṣṇa, the God of divine love, fires these arrows at the hearts of those imbued with mādhurya-rasa.

(45)

rādhā nitya-jana ānugatya vinā,
śrī-rādhā-ramaṇa rāma
dekha nāhi deya sevā nāhi laya
haya tāre sadā vāma

Without following the eternal associates of Rādhā, Śrī Rādhā-ramaṇa does not give His mercy. He does not give His audience, nor does He accept one’s service to such a person, He always remains unfavourable.

(46)

kṛpā kari more ohe gurudeva
tava dāsa-dāsa kara
tava kṛpā ha’le rādhā-dāsya pāba
rādhānātha tatpara

O Gurudeva, be merciful to me, and make me the servant of your servant. If your grace is awarded, I will attain rādhā-dāsya, and become devoted to Rādhā-nātha.

(47)

śrī-gopī-vallabha ohe gopīnātha
ei kṛpā kara more’
śrī-guru kṛpāya yena mora hṛde
tava anurāga sphure

O Gopīnātha, beloved of the gopīs! Please give this mercy to me. By the grace of Śrī Guru, may loving attraction to You awaken within my heart.

(48)

sambandhābhidheya prayojana tattva
sphuruka āmāra hṛde
he kṛṣṇa govinda gopīnātha ei
nivedana rāṅgā-pade

May the truths of sambandha, abhidheya, and prayojana awaken within my heart. O Kṛṣṇa, Govinda, Gopīnātha! I place this humble appeal at Your red lotus-red feet.

(49)

āra kata-dina ghuriyā beḍāba
jaḍa sukha anveṣhiyā
ohe gopīnātha tava anveṣaṇe
pāgala kara’ e hiyā

How many days will I wander about, searching for mundane happiness? O Gopīnātha, the quest for You makes this heart mad.

(50)

śrī-rādhāra bhāva la’ye gaurahari
kāṅdila yemana ka’re
tad-anusaraṇe yena niśi-dina
kāṅdi tava nāma dha’re

Accepting the bhāva of Śrī Rādhā, Gaurahari wept in that way. Following in His footsteps, may I weep day and night, taking Your Holy Name.

(51)

tava līlā-sthāne dāo vāsa more,
tava nija-jana saṅga
(tava) nāma guṇa-gāne kāṭe yena kāla
smari sadā vraja-raṅga

Grant me residence in the place of Your pastimes, in the association of Your own devotees. May my time pass in chanting Your Name and qualities, ever remembering the joy of Vraja.

(52)

saṁsāra, saṁsāra ka’re yena āra
miche kāla nāhi yāya
asatera saṅga para-carcā yena
mana kabhu nāhi cāya

Let me no longer remain absorbed in worldly entanglement, so that my time is not wasted. May my mind never desire bad company or indulgence in gossip about others.

(53)

tomāra sevāra tare yena duḥkha
sahite pravṛtti haya
tava sukha ceṣṭā sādhite satata
sarvendriya matta raya

May I develop the inclination to endure suffering for the sake of Your service. May all my senses remain fully absorbed, ever engaged in striving for Your happiness.

(54)

kanaka kāminī pratiṣṭhā bāghinī
sadā yena rahe dūre
śrī-rūpa śikṣāra yukata vairāgya
satata hṛdaye sphure

May the tigress of wealth, lust, and prestige always remain far away from me. May the principle of yukta-vairāgya, as taught by Śrī Rūpa, ever shine within my heart.

(55)

lokare dekhāna’ markaṭa vairāgye
ruci yena nāhi haya
parāpekṣā śūnya ha’ye yena mana
tomāte majiyā raya

May I have no taste for monkey-like renunciation meant to impress others. May my mind become free from dependence on others’ opinions and remain absorbed only in You.

(56)

jaḍa sukha-duḥkha ghāta pratighāte
asthira haile mana
kemane bhajiba bala gopīnātha
tomāra caraṇa-dhana

When the consistent clashes of material happiness and sorrow make the mind restless, tell me, O Gopīnātha – how shall I worship the treasure of Your lotus feet?

(57)

śata jhañjhā-vāde viṣama saṅkaṭe
paḍiyā-o yena kabhu
tomāra rātula caraṇa nā bhuli
ei kṛpā kara prabhu

Even if I fall into terrible danger, amid hundreds of storms and violent winds, may I never forget Your reddish lotus feet – O Lord, please grant me this mercy.

(58)

tumi ta’ viṣaya āśraya vigraha
śrī-guru-caraṇa mora
taṅhāra āśraye thāki yena sadā
śrī-caraṇa sevi tora

You are indeed the object of worship (viṣaya), and my guru’s holy feet are the embodiment of transcendental refuge (āśraya-vigraha). May I always remain under that shelter, and thus serve Your divine feet.

(59)

satīrthera saṅge yena mile miśe
tomāra kīrtana kari
rūpa-raghunātha-pada-dhūli yena
āmāra svarūpa smari

May I associate with my godbrothers and together perform Your kīrtana. By remembering the dust of the lotus feet of Rūpa and Raghunātha, may I remember my own svarūpa (intrinsic spiritual identity).

(60)

rūpa-raghunātha vāṇī yena mora
satata hṛdaye jāge
tāhā pracārite, koṭi kaṇṭha yena
āmāra mānasa māge

May the message of Rūpa and Raghunātha awaken constantly within my heart. To propagate those teachings, may my mind long for a million voices.

(61)

hā hā gopīnātha kṛpā kari kabe
dibe dīne vraja-vāsā
tava līlā sthāne tava jana saṅge
rahite manera āśā

Alas, alas—O Gopīnātha, when will You be merciful and grant this fallen soul residence in Vraja? To remain in the place of Your pastimes, in the company of Your own devotees – this is my heart’s longing.

(62)

divya cintāmaṇi dhāma vṛndāvana
āhā kabe sphūrti pābe
tava guṇa-gāne sadā matta raba
nava nava anurāge

Divine Vṛndāvana – the abode made of transcendental wish-fulfilling gems! O when will you manifest within my heart? Forever absorbed in the singing of Your qualities, may I remain intoxicated with ever-new divine love.

(63)

ati dīna-hīna patita kāṅgāla,
āmi ta’ bhajana-hīna
e saba prārthanā mora pakṣa ha’te
jāni nahe samīcīna

I am extremely fallen, destitute, and miserable – indeed, I am devoid of bhajana. I know that all these prayers, coming from my side are not proper.

(64)

tathāpi tomāra dayāra svabhāva
smariyā bharasā kari
unmādera nyāya kahinu pralāpa
dhṛṣṭatā kṣama he hari

Yet, remembering Your natural mercy, I have some hope. Like a madman, I have spoken delirious words – O Hari, please forgive such audacity.

(65)

sabāra āśiṣa yācitechi āja
sabe hao parasanna
‘kṛṣṇe matir astu’ āśīrvāda diyā
kara more sabe dhanya

Today I beg for everyone’s blessings. May you all be gracious. By granting the benediction, kṛṣṇe matir astu (‘May devotion to Kṛṣṇa arise’), please make me fortunate.
