Overview

The following Sanskrit poem (originally entitled ‘Śrīla Prabhupāda Avirbhāva Śata-varṣa Pūrtai Tadīya Vandana Dvādaśakam’) by Śrīla Śrīdhara Deva Gosvāmī Mahārāja was composed in honour of the 100th appearance day celebrations of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda in 1974. It was published in January of that year in two journals – ‘The Gauḍīya’ and ‘Śrī Caitanya Vāṇī.’

On the occasion of the celebrations of the centennial birth anniversary of Jagad-guru Śrī Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Prabhupāda, the most venerable and eminent ācārya amongst the learned scholars of the world.

He appeared at the feet of Śrī Jagannātha, the purifier of the fallen, only to deliver humanity by the Lord’s mercy. His heart reflected Śrī Caitanya’s intense pain of separation from Hari, which was seen in Śrī-kṣetra (Purī). I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

* The version found in Caitanya Vāṇī magazine begins with the line, bhuvana-patita-pāri śrī-jagannātha-jātam (‘He was born in the land of Śrī Jagannātha, who is the purifier of the fallen.’)

He manifested eternal kṛṣṇa-prema whose very essence is saṅkīrtana. Continuously meditating upon Śrī Śrī Guru-Gaurāṅga, he begs for their mercy. Through his own regulated devotion, he has honoured the desires of Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

He has acquired eternal servitorship to Śyāmasundara and Gaurāṅga. With great attention, he propagated service to the Lord, the Holy Name and the dhāma. He revealed the goal of the śruti, as discussed in various śāstras and by self-realised souls. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

prabhupādam iha vande jāta-śātābda-pūrtam

He felt separation from his guru, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda, who is non-different from Śrī Gaura. In spite of feeling greatly distressed and unworthy, he realised his true spiritual identity (ātmānubhāva) and received direction and inner inspiration from the auspicious feet of his guru. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

From that point on, he overcame many obstacles and achieved renown, and gained disciples that had abundant sukṛti, who were learned, renounced, and possessed spiritual wealth. He was endowed with many auspicious, divine and wonderful achievements. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

At dawn, as the year 431 Gaurābda approached, by the Lord’s will, and to honour that day, he took up the garb of a sannyāsī and the tridaṇḍa. Thus, he completely renounced all material things for the lotus feet of Śrī Gaura. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

*The Caitanya Vāṇī version reads, yad iha vihita sarvotsarga-gauraṅghri-padmaṁ, which means the same as the above.

Being irreproachable and most learned, he is worthy of being venerated by the hosts of demigods and sages. Possessing many divine qualities, he is suitable association for the wise who are expert in the śāstra. Now, in every direction, there is an ecstatic festival of narrations and songs about Hari. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

Following his Gurudeva’s desire, he achieved renown by internally taking shelter of the Name of Śrī Caitanya in Śrī Māyāpura. There, he created a maṭha for propagating gaura-saṅkīrtana. I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

In all directions, he gave life to his disciples through his guidance, by composing books and journals in various languages. Seeing the many Deities that he installed, one attains prema-tattva (the essence of divine love). I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.

I offer my obeisance unto Śrīla Prabhupāda, on the completion of his birth centennial.
